We Dream of Space

We Dream of Space is a rather long book for some readers, consisting of three hundred and ninety one pages. Although I have read books much longer than this, it still contains plenty of juicy and interesting information, and the plot isn’t bad, either. It contains three main characters in the Nelson Thomas family: Cash, who is going to fail seventh grade for the second time; Fitch, with anger management issues; and Bird, who dreams of rockets and space but seems invisible and is unsure of her dream.

Yet I did not give this book a “very good” (my most common rating, if you haven’t noticed, I’ll try rating other books that I didn’t quite enjoy so much), or even a “good”, and there are a few reasons for that. I did not have that much of a strong memory on it, because it ended a bit too suddenly for me. Yes, the ending was a good one–I won’t spoil it, but I would like to say that I feel like I didn’t get enough of the story. It spent a bit too long on some uninteresting parts; of course, this is only my opinion. I have the exact same problem, so it is understandable.

This next reason is even more biased, so bear with me. As the title indicates, it has a lot to do with space. Of course, like everyone else, I’m interested in finding life in other galaxies and exploring Mars. And it’s not like I have anything against the unfortunately failed Challenger disaster; quite the opposite, I feel deep sympathy toward Bird, one of the main characters, who loves space and the Challenger. But, I’m just not much of a space person. I mean, my head is in the clouds a lot, but out of those many occupations to choose from, one of the last ones on my list is an astronaut, so space isn’t anything special for me.

Besides, I didn’t have much connection with the main characters, because none of them I really liked or respected. They were all amazing in their own way, but not in my way. I can’t connect in them in any particular way, because they have different hobbies, and I believe different personalities in comparison to me.

So in conclusion, this book wasn’t the perfect match for me. It did not have a deep impression on me, and I barely remember the details, because I wasn’t really into it. But it might and probably will be a remarkable book for many other readers who don’t agree with me.
