Meet Abbie Wu, an about-to start-middle-school kid who is the sister of the awesome Peter Wu. Abbie dreads the Middles because nothing ever happens good in the middles. She doesn’t have a “Thing” (basically an elective), her homeroom teacher is mean, the lunch is disgusting, and her best friends seem to LIKE middle school. Also, she got stuck in Study Hall as her elective, which is taught by Mrs. Skeltor, her mean homeroom teacher. Abbie feels doomed until in study hall, she starts an underground lunch exchange with the other students. Soon, it spreads everywhere in middle school. Finally, Abbie feels like she found her Thing. Unfortunately, good times don’t last forever. Alexis Bunker (the teacher’s pet, but part of lunch exchange)’s mother finds out. Mrs. Bunker is a very strict mom, especially about food. Abbie feels dead, but the vice principal lets her go with a warning: no more lunch exchanges. But it strikes Abbie that it is over, making her depressed. But one day her brother, Peter Wu(Abbie doesn’t like him because he is so popular and is the teacher’s pet in both middle and high school, so the middle school teachers hoped that Abbie was a miniature Peter Wu, and she’s not) comes to pick her up! This makes Abbie flabbergasted. It is so weird! Turns out that Peter has come to help her with her problems. Abbie, once again is open mouthed. But she tells Peter about her problems and they have a great time. Slowly, Abbie understands that you don’t have to have a specific Thing. I love this book because I like how Abbie learns that The Middles aren’t so bad.
