I was recommended to read this book by my friend, who’s common username is Meowlody. At first, I was a bit skeptical. I didn’t particularly like the number seven.
But quickly, after I read a page or two, I knew this book was another one I would enjoy.
And it sure is. Counting by 7s has kindness, love, grief, disaster, intelligence, humor, and even more in it.
Willow Chance is someone you’d never imagine existed. She’s a sort of crazy genius. Obsessed with plants, medical conditions, numbers, and more, she’s always been the odd one out. She has absolutely zero friends and knows everything in class.
The only people in the entire world that love her and care for her are her foster parents, Jimmy and Roberta Chance. They mean the whole world to Willow.
But one horrible day, tragedy strikes the family. Jimmy and Roberta are killed in a car accident, and Willow is devastated. The soul goes out of her body, and she stares into space most the time. What is the point of living anymore when the people you loved the most are gone?
Yet Willow is not alone. She has a group of supporters and friends around her. There’s Mai Nguyen, Willow’s new, fierce, determined, and only friend; her surly brother, Quang-ha, artistic but left out and grumpy; their mother, Pattie Nguyen, who’s compassionate, hard-working, motherly, and kind; Dell Duke, the school counselor who’s messy, fat, and lazy, but changes over time; and Jairo Hernandez, a taxi driver who looks up to Willow as his angel.
With the help of her friends, maybe Willow can overcome her grief and find her purpose of living.
