A boy stood with his father and his great coon dog, Sounder, one day during the 20th century. Sounder was a powerful dog, with an even more powerful voice. It was very beautiful. But one day the boy’s father was captured. Sounder attacked the men who had captured his master, but was shot. Then he disappeared. The boy’s mother guessed that Sounder probably went into the woods to heal his wounds and would return in maybe less than a week. But almost two months passed, and there was no sign of Sounder. Then one day Sounder reappeared. One of his eyes were blind, and one ear a stub. But those did not bother the boy. What did was why Sounder wouldn’t bark.
The reason was: Sounder’s master. He was gone. But one day he returned, limping and crippled. Although the boy’s father returned, he could no longer go hunting with Sounder. And soon he died. And old Sounder died too. But his voice would go on forever.
