The Last Bloodline

This webtoon is quite a ride. With its dramatic scenes and beautiful drawings, I was attracted to it from the start. In the beginning, it seemed like an absolutely brilliant webtoon.

I still think it’s decent. It has its own take on the traditional creatures, vampires, that mixes the modern world with the myths of old (for instance, one of the vampires’ clan leaders is a pop idol). The main character, Mallory also has her own quirks and personality traits that make her stand out and a valid character. The art style is also an add-on; it’s pretty and fits in perfectly well with the slightly gloomy, subdued mood of the story. The plot isn’t too slow or too fast.

However, there are hundreds of webtoons out there, and many I’ve read are better. There isn’t much creativity in this comic except for the use of vampires. It’s another one of those classic stories. Poor, unimportant girl finds out that there are a whole lot of fanged dudes and dudettes in her world, and then sparks a civil war between them when they decide that she’s gotta be the queen in their prophecy. Oh, and she gets these two sidekicks that will defend her life at no cost even though she did absolutely nothing. One of them’s rather handsome and seductive too; a future love interest?

Sound familiar? There’s no originality in it that makes it different from any generic fantasy book or webtoon. However, I think it’s largely up to personal opinion here. Some people just love supernatural fics, while I’ve never been a big fan of reading about vampires and the like. Although I was captivated in the beginning, I lost interest in the plot after a while. It became a little confusing and unnecessary for me, so I lagged behind on a few episodes before catching up on it again.

There are better webtoons out there. However, if you’ve got nothing else to read, this is a pretty decent pick, especially because this time, it’s not a matter of skill issue in the author or a plot that’s just too bland. It’s mainly my personal opinion; I simply couldn’t stay focused on the story for long enough. But maybe you will. Who knows?
