WARNING: DO NOT READ THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE READ THE PREQUEL, SLACKER

Our well liked protagonist of Gordon Korman’s Slacker is back in the thrilling sequel, Level 13.

When I realized that Slacker had a sequel, I put it on hold almost right away. I had high expectations for this book. I wasn’t disappointed. I wonder how Korman even does it! The mysterious and heart-stopping yet vivid and realistic plot is something I will never forget.

Cam Boxer, though he now has his popular club with almost the whole school in it, still is on his way to pursue his dream life of being a famous gamer, like his idol, Draja Dubrovnik. But he needs to get away from school to start his streaming career.

So what does Mr-President-of-the-Biggest-Club-in-the-School do? He announces that he is “flunking” his grades, and says he needs to take a break from the P.A.G. and instead spend time home studying.

What does he get? The club members feel sorry for him and help him do all his homework. Cam doesn’t feel that bad about it; he’s made an astonishing discovery. A random game he picked up at a fundraiser contains the unbeatable Level 13. This older level was banned because of mysterious reasons.

Almost immediately, gamers realize what he’s got in his hands: a copy of an ultra-rare game. Cam’s channel, GameFox229, is a gigantic hit. People are waiting for him to get to Level 13, and they’re also attracted by Elvis the beaver, who sits on his shoulder when he plays.

But Cam, under pressure and exhaustion, games almost all the time and gets nearly no sleep. It’s like a job to him now, not only because he’s earning loads of money, but mainly because he spends so much, too much time on the channel.

Is gaming as fun as before, and is it still worth doing it?
