In this touching story by Lauren Wolk, author of Wolf Hollow, a twelve-year-old-girl named Crow was washed up on one of the Elizabeth Islands on a skiff as an infant. Osh, the inhabitant of the island, adopted her. Osh had escaped from his old life in the city, which he hated, and wanted to live by himself on the island. But he had room in his heart for Crow, and they loved each other. But all the other islanders try to avoid her, and when Crow asks why, she finds out that they suspect she is from Penikese, where lepers once lived. When Crow sets out to find her real parents with Osh and the only islander who will touch her and is her friend, Miss Maggie, she uncovers danger and mystery, including a treasure for her, left from her leper mother, and a greedy man who wants it. Osh tries not to show it, but he is hurt that Crow is so determined in trying to find her parents, and thinks she doesn’t love him. But Crow learns the true importance of her family–Osh, Miss Maggie, and the island. In this book, I like how Crow slowly understands what true family is made of–the people who love her, or the people who raised her.
