Yanek Gruener is a Jewish boy during the Holocaust. He survived ten concentration camps, where he worked restlessly day after day. But to survive was most important. Yanek reminded himself: he was not dead yet, not yet. Yanek saw many people die, including his friend Fred. He experienced death marches, where he nearly starved to death. But he remembered not to lose hope. There were mean kapos, or group leaders. In the concentration camps, the men starved, and many became Muselmanns, or people who lost all hope of surviving and were killed by the Nazis.`Finally, finally, he is rescued by the Americans. Yanek survived the Holocaust, and that is what he wanted to do.
