After their exciting adventures in the last book of the Mysterious Benedict Society, the four kids are living safely in Mr. Benedict’s home-but not for long. Ten Men have found the kids and they leave-on purpose-clues for the children to solve. This is why the usually careful Ten Man McCracken drops a letter from Mr. Curtain on the floor carelessly. The children do not understand that the easy clues are all a trick until it is too late, and they are caught into Third Island Prison.

During all this, Constance has found her power: she is able to read and go into other people’s minds. By using this power, she, with the encouragement of her friends, tries to send a message to Mr. Benedict and the rest of their capture. Then, she describes what she sees in her mind: Mr. Benedict and the rest wearing silly disguises and holding Moocho Branzos’s delicious pies but they were S shaped. Soon, Sticky and Kate began to doubt that the message came from Mr. Benedict.

But it turns out that it was from him. It meant Spies. S-pies. Silly costumes. So, Mr. Benedict, Milligan and other friends of the kids come to rescue them. But they have to rescue them first in order for them to rescue the kids because Mr. Curtain will ask Mr. Benedict, dressed up as someone called Mr. Rubicund, a question that he is supposed to know. So, Constance sends him the answer. With the help of Milligan, the kids narrowly escape after totally defeating Mr. Curtain. The story ends on a happy note.
