This is a very intense and interesting book. Four special kids take tests to go on an adventure organized by the genius Mr. Benedict: Reynard (Reynie) Muldoon, George (Sticky) Washington, Kate Wetherall, and Constance Contraire. All four kids have unique abilities and weaknesses, too. After naming themselves The Mysterious Benedict Society, they set foot on an amazing adventure with help from Mr. Benedict, Rhonda Kazembe, Number Two, and Milligan, who, as the kids find out later, is actually Kate’s father, to stop Mr. Benedict’s evil but identical in both looks and genius minded twin, Mr. Curtain, from brain sweeping people and trying to control the world with his machine, the Whisperer.
As spies for Mr. Benedict at the L.I.V.E., or The Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, which is the school Mr. Curtain works at, the four special kids learn that they will have to trust each other and work very hard not to get caught. Also, they need to become Messengers, or people at the Institute who receive lessons from the Whisperer, quickly to learn what exactly Mr. Curtain is doing. When, at the end, Reynie and Sticky finally become Messengers, they are disturbed by the thought that they think the Whisperer is actually comforting, for it helps you overcome your greatest fears.
After a short period of time being Messengers, Reynie and Sticky are, unfortunately, caught by nobody but Mr. Curtain himself. With help from Kate, Constance (by the way, she is three) and Milligan, they manage to escape and safely go back to the building Mr. Benedict lives in. As for their adventures, they are soon to be continued in The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey.
